Repair, 7th Edition by Robin Leonard and John Lamb Publisher: Nolo In general I like most Nolo books I have read because they provide useful legal advice for non-lawyers like myself. This book is a good guide on how to repair your credit. The book goes over some sound credit repair advice like assessing your current debt, getting out of debt, over spending, dealing with collection agencies, negotiating with creditors, and bankruptcy. The book also explains why you should avoid "credit repair clinics". Basically, many "credit repair clinics" are just out to get your money. They claim to be non-profit, but if they were really a non-profit organization, why do they charge so much to help you fix your credit? Also, if they were really as helpful as their ads claim, why to so many states have laws designed to protect consumers from "credit repair clinics"? The book has more to say about "credit repair clinics". The sample letters are a good start and make it easier for you to create a letter to creditors and collection agencies. The letters can be used as an outline to cretae your own personalized letters. The sample letters are helpful because it makes it easier for you to fire off letters to creditors, collection agencies, and credit reporting agencies. By writing letters, you document your situation and when and who you communicated with to try to resolve your credit problems. The letter trail you create can be used as evidence if you need to take a debt collector, credit reporting agency or any other party to court. Documenting your credit problem is important. Make sure you document your case by writing letters. It is a good idea to indicate in your letters any phone converstaions you have had, who you spoke to, when, and what you spoke about. Often people to do not note when, who and what they spoke about when speaking on the phone. The book has a CD-ROM with all of the sample forms and letters. One thing I don't like about "Credit Repair" is that they do not warn you that you should not obtain your free credit report by going online and using web sites like annualcreditreport.com. You should not obtain your credit report from a web site because you may be giving up important legal rights by doing so. For more on this see www.reallyfreecreditreport.com. I think Nolo doing a disservice to consumers by leaving this important legal advice out. |
